Historical harp fingering techniques of Ireland and Wales

Description

Develop your skills and build confidence playing the harp with historical fingering techniques of the early Irish and bardic Welsh harp traditions. Both incorporate playing and selective damping in similar ways to create beauty and subtlety in sound and articulation. In this course, students will be taught two historical pieces of music as we explore and learn the fingering techniques of these two harp traditions, guided by James Ruff and Karen Loomis.

The first three course sessions, taught by James, will focus on learning to play a piece of early Irish harp music using eighteenth-century Irish harp fingering techniques. These sessions follow on the course Introduction to a Reconstructed Method of Playing, taught by Sylvia Crawford and Alessia Bianchi. James will share his personal approach to using Sylvia Crawford's method, and teach you the exercises he uses to play naturally with ease and fluency.

The final three sessions of this course, taught by Karen, will introduce the harp fingering techniques preserved in Robert ap Huw's seventeenth-century manuscript of bardic Welsh cerdd dant. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of the tradition, how to play the figurations and their role in the music, and how to read and understand the music tablature. You will learn how to apply these skills to play a beautiful piece from the manuscript. Along the way, we will discuss the similarities and differences between the Irish and Welsh techniques to deepen your understanding of these historical traditions.

This course is for students who have taken Introduction to a Reconstructed Method of Playing —OR— have some previous experience with either the historical Irish or Welsh fingering techniques used in this course.

Session 1

A fresh look at Slieve Gallen (1 of 3)

This beautiful piece was collected by Edward Bunting from the playing of the Irish harper Hugh Higgins in 1792. Over the next three sessions, we'll look at its history and manuscript sources, then begin to work on learning to play the piece using James's new setting, which incorporates the traditional fingering techniques collected by Bunting from historical Irish harpers. We will discuss various approaches to the piece, and you will be shown the Irish harp fingering techniques used in this setting. James will also share the exercises he uses to help you master playing these techniques with ease. Whether you've played Slieve Gallen before, or are learning it for the first time, this new setting will provide a fresh, historically informed approach to playing it.

What is this music? The fundamentals of cerdd dant, the figurations and how to play them

This session will introduce cerdd dant [string music], the Welsh bardic music entabulated in the seventeenth-century manuscript of Robert ap Huw (GB-Lbl MS Add. 14905). The figurations (fingering techniques) used to play this music will be explained and demonstrated. Guidance and course materials will be provided to help you practice them on your own.

Homework: Practice playing the cerdd dant figurations. Write down at least one question, challenge, or observation you have about them to discuss during our next session.

Session 5

You can play this! How to read and understand cerdd dant tablature

In this session, we'll review the figurations and discuss your questions and observations. You will be shown how to read and understand the music tablature in Robert ap Huw's manuscript, and we will work on learning to play the first cainc [branch] of the piece Kaniad Llywelyn Dylynior ['Song of Llywelyn the Harper']

Homework: Practice the figurations used in cainc I of Kaniad Llywelyn Dylynior. Also practice playing through the lower hand of the piece. Once you are comfortable playing the lower hand, begin adding the upper hand, playing both hands together.
