October Harpers' Gathering and Meet the Tutor

Join us ONLINE Sunday, 23 October, 2.00 – 4.00 pm Irish time for our Harpers' Gathering and meet one of our NEW winter Acadmah na gCláirseach tutors

Richard Maher

Join us at our friendly Harpers' Gathering community social time from 2.00 to 3.00 pm , hosted by HHSI volunteer, Barbara Karlik. Come and enjoy harp-related talk, share your projects and progress, and try out tunes you want to play in front of a small, very supportive audience. These informal, monthly gatherings are a great way to meet other harp players, stay connected and develop your skills.

Then, at 3.00 pm, meet Richard Maher one of our winter Acadamh na gCláirseach tutors, for more friendly chat and a chance to hear about our NEW upcoming online course, Introduction to Irish for harpists and singers. This course is a response to the many participants at the 2022 Acadamh who expressed a wish to dip a toe into the waters of the Irish language, and will be offered in our winter Acadamh programme, beginning 4 February, 2023. We have put together six carefully curated sessions that will take you organically from the basics of pronunciation to an exploration of harp terminology to a session on the orthography and abbreviations that often make reading an 18th-century MS page a bit tricky for the uninitiated, all the way to learning a harp song in Irish in the final session.

Richard, holds a BA in Irish language (Gaeilge) & Politics, and an MA in Irish Studies from University College Dublin. He teaches Irish, English as a Second Language, Social Studies and other subjects at Rathmines College of Further Education in Dublin, and will be presenting three sessions of the course.
